Ford Fiesta ST review – MPG and running costs

Stands as one of the most affordable performance car experiences, both in fuel costs and consumables

  • Exuberant and wildly entertaining chassis; powertrain; precision
  • Single high-spec model is pricey compared to when it all started

Economy in the real world is pretty impressive – our old long-term Fiesta ST had averaged 38.1mpg during our tenure. If you opt to take your ST on a track – a not unreasonable scenario, given how entertaining the new car is when freed from the constraints of road driving – then you’ll need to keep a beady eye on the gauge, too, as the car we tried burned through more than half a tank in a few short sessions. It is worth noting that both the i20 N and Toyota GR Yaris have quite an appetite for unleaded, with the Toyota particularly thirsty.

STs wear Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres, and getting through a set of those will cost around £150 on their 205/40 R18 wheel and tyre set-up. Other consumables, such as brake pads and discs, won’t likely cost the earth, unless you drive everywhere at 10/10ths – which is a significant possibility…

So while a Fiesta ST isn’t quite the bargain hot hatchback it once was, meaningful gains in efficiency help keep it a relatively inexpensive option for buyers after a fun car that’s also not going to cost the earth to run.
