Prices, Specs and Rivals

The Range Rover Sport starts at £61,250 for an SDV6 diesel in HSE spec; if you crave any other drivetrain, you’ll need to upgrade to plusher Autobiography spec, and rather neatly, the hybrid, 4.4 diesel and 5.0 petrol all start at £82,650. Price wise, the Porsche Cayenne is on par for most variants (particularly lower down in the range), but most impressively for the Sport, it’s around £20,000 cheaper than the regular Range Rover, like-for-like.

Using our supercharged test car as an example, its Autobiography trim begins to look like good value alongside its closest rivals, the £92,628 Porsche Cayenne Turbo and £86,995 Mercedes ML63 AMG. Not only does it significantly undercut them on list price, some of its standard features make its rivals look a little tight-fisted, plus its standard alloy wheel size is the highest of the trio.

The top of the line Range Rover Sport SVR costs £93,450 before options, although we would suggest dishing out the extra £2400 for the 22-inch wheels and Continental tyres. Interestingly, a top of the line Cayenne Turbo S, which boasts a 15-second quicker Nurburgring time, is actually a much more costly choice, starting at £118,455.
