Ford Focus ST review - MPG and running costs

Petrol and diesel economy figures are about what you’d expect, and the standard Michelin tyres are widely available

Evo rating
  • Strong performance; agile; entertaining chassis
  • Expensive; unnatural steering response

Choose your poison: With petrol power, the latest Focus ST is capable of a combined 35.8mpg whether hatchback or estate, with CO2 emissions of 179g/km for each. In diesel form, economy swells to 58.9mpg (again for both body styles, and with the manual transmission) and CO2 puffs out at a rate of 125 grams every kilometre.

Aside from fuel costs, that means a Focus ST petrol will set you back an additional £855 in Vehicle Excise Duty in year one and £145 thereafter, while the diesel drops this to £170 in the first year followed by the standard £145 in subsequent years.

These figures do rely on the government not bonking itself on the head and making one or both fuels illegal or something in the next few years, but for the time being the diesel should be less expensive to run both at the pumps and by Direct Debit each year.

With less power it may end up using its front tyres at a slower rate too, though even the petrol one’s less brutal than it used to be so a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tyres should last a while. If not, a set of replacement 235/35 R19 tyres for the optional 19-inch wheels is £640 fitted from Blackcircles before multibuy discounts.
