MPG and running costs

Volkswagen promises 62.8mpg from the GTD, which is no mean feat given its performance credentials. Real world usage is more likely to fall in the mid 40s if you drive the car in a manner befitting its potential, though.

Efficiency doesn't drop off too much when pushing on, which means you're more likely to exploit the fun of the GTD more of the time. A good day’s driving with the car left in Sport still saw the Golf returning 43mpg, which is very impressive.

CO2 figures of 122g/km for the manual and 124g/km for the DSG put both cars into the £160 new car bracket, not too bad given the performance on offer.
