BMW 320d ED Sport – dynamic diesel joins 3 Series range

Sport trim gives BMW's frugal 3 Series diesel a visual kick

BMW has combined its Sport trim level and ultra-efficient 2.0-litre EfficientDynamics diesel engine to create the 320d ED Sport.

Mindful of the need for low CO2 figures and a specification to dazzle in the company car park, the ED Sport is now the most efficient Sport-badged model in the range.

At the same time, its 161bhp, 295lb ft diesel unit still allows for a 7.9-second dash to 62mph for the six-speed manual saloon and 8.2sec for the manual estate.

Opt for the eight-speed automatic and you’ll shave a tenth from both those numbers, while top speed is as high as 143mph for the automatic-equipped saloon.

The autos are also least profligate with fuel. Up to 70.6mpg is achievable with the ED Sport saloon, a figure that drops marginally to 68.9mph with the manual. The Touring hits 67.3mpg with the auto, 65.7mpg in manual trim.

CO2 is low too – essential for low vehicle tax and company car tax fees; the automatic saloon emits 104g/km, through to 114g/km for the manual Touring. Each sits in VED Band B and commands a 19 per cent BIK rating.

BMW also says the model’s residual value has increased thanks to the desirable combination of low consumption and the Sport styling – beneficial for monthly lease or purchase costs.

That styling includes a set of 17-inch alloy wheels, with options for 18- and 19-inch designs. Inside, there’s a Business Navigation package, a choice of Dakota leather upholsteries, BMW’s Sports steering wheel and heated sports front seats.

The changes amount to £840-worth of equipment for a £500 increase over the ED Plus - £30,205 for the saloon and £31,505 for the Touring (each with the manual ‘box).
