Cupra quotes an official range of 264 miles for the entry-level Born with the smaller battery and 201bhp motor, which is respectable – if unremarkable – in 2023. The 228bhp e-Boost model cuts that down to 260 miles, with the upgraded 77kWh battery boosting range to a highly competitive 341 miles.

In our time driving the base car (which is in theory the lightest and most efficient of the lot), we managed an average energy consumption rating of 3.7 miles per kWh, which equates to a projected range of 215 miles. That’s some way short of the claimed figure, but we drove with no conscious attempt to conserve energy, and switching to the most efficient Range drive would almost certainly squeeze a few more miles from the battery.

Charging rates vary depending on the battery size, with the entry-level Born offering speeds of up to 125kW for a 5-80 per cent top up in 35 minutes. The 77kWh model offers faster 135kW charging capability, so despite its larger battery, the cells can be replenished in about the same time.
