Mercedes-AMG reveals E53 saloon and estate

New E53 continues Mercedes-AMG’s shift towards hybrid powertrains

Mercedes has revealed the all-new Mercedes-AMG E53 4Matic+. Available in saloon and estate body styles, priced from £61,835 and £63,835 respectively, the first deliveries are scheduled for July 2018. Taking over from the E43, the E53 will slot below the E63 models in the AMG ranks.

Visually, one might struggle to distinguish the new E53 from the outgoing E43. However, it's an altogether different beast in regards to its powertrain. The twin-turbo 3-litre V6 engine found in the E43 has been ditched in favour of a hybrid set-up employing Mercedes’ ‘EQ Boost’ technology, first implemented in the AMG CLS53.

The E53 combines a 3-litre in-line six with the EQ Boost electric motor, which doubles as a starter-alternator. Sandwiched between the engine and a nine-speed automatic transmission, the motor serves up 22bhp and 181lb ft of torque, taking the respective totals to 429bhp and 383lb ft. That’s 33bhp more than the E43, with the peak torque figure unchanged.

With power apportioned to all four wheels, the E53, in both forms, can sprint from 0 to 62mph in 4.5 seconds – 0.2 quicker than its predecessor. Top speed remains limited to 155mph. The 48V hybrid system helps return 32.5mpg on a combined cycle, with an emissions output of 200g/km.

In terms of driver aids, the E53 is well equipped as standard. AMG Ride Control, based on Mercedes’ Air Body Control air suspension, and AMG Dynamic Select (with its choice of driving modes) constitute the chassis systems, while to keep the E53 on-brand aurally, it comes complete with a performance exhaust.

Step inside and you’ll find leather-upholstered, electrically adjustable seats, contrasted with red stitching. An adjacent pair of dash-mounted 12.3-inch screens act as the dial pack and infotainment interface. Both are highly configurable and provide access to the comprehensive technology suite, Comand Online.

Packages for added convenience and semi-autonomous functionality are also available. The Driver Assistance package (£1695) adds a whole host of driver aids, such as Active Cruise Control and Active Braking Assist. Perhaps worth considering is the Premium Plus equipment line (which includes the Burmester surround sound system), the Keyless-Go Comfort package (featuring hands-free access, automatic boot closing and keyless entry), and the panoramic glass sunroof.
