Classic Car Auctions September Sale - E30 M3, Clio 172 and more

Modern classics abound in CCA's upcoming sale - we pick our potential highlights

Few auctions this year will offer a more eclectic (yet relatively affordable) collection of machinery than the Classic Car Auctions September sale.

From modern performance bargains to undisputed classics like the Mk1 Volkswagen Golf GTI, BMW E30 M3 and Lancia Delta Integrale Evo II, there should be something for just about everyone.

Several cars stand out for those potentially low of budget. A Renaultsport Clio 172 from 2000 is one such car, being sold with no reserve and likely snapped up for just a few grand by the time it has crossed the block. The original Clio RS isn’t quite as extreme as some since, but it brought new levels of power to its segment and the chunky styling has aged very well indeed. Good chassis, too.

Other appealing and potentially cheap offerings include a 2001 Audi TT, a classy Mercedes-Benz 190E from 1994 and for an estimate of £5k-£7k, a 1984 Alfa Romeo Sud Sprint Green Cloverleaf, rated 78/135 for condition. The same estimate also covers a Fiat Strada Abarth from the same year.

Fans of rallying also have a few choices, from a 1995 Toyota Celica GT-Four (93/135 for condition, no reserve), a 1994 Lancia Delta Integrale Evo II (estimate £35k-£40k) and a 1985 Audi Ur-Quattro, with a partial history file and no reserve.

A few other cars catch our eye too, including a 2002 example of BMW’s Z3 M Coupe, imported from Japan but in left-hand drive. It gets 85/135 for condition and should sell for between £22k-£25k; the rarity of these M Coupes and their cult appeal means values are only likely to continue increasing.

We’re also partial to a stunning 1988 BMW M3 Evolution II in Misano red (£45k-£50k), a 1986 Ferrari 328 GTB with the same estimate, and a 94/135-rated example of the increasingly appealing Ferrari 550 Maranello. Built in 1998 and reading 29,000 miles, the left-hand drive example is expected to reach £65k-£75k.

And then there are the curios: a 1955 Ford hot-rod estimated at £6k-£8k. There's a 1981 DeLorean DMC-12, with a £25k-£28k estimate, and a 1985 Mercedes-Benz G-wagen of almost unrecognisable good taste compared to modern equivalents: £11k-£13k should be enough to secure the forest green example with its sensibly-sized wheels and understated trim.

Appealing too is a 1963 Mini Cooper S 1071 replica, built from a fresh shell using parts from an original 998cc Cooper and a 1071S. evo-style fun doesn’t come much smaller or more characterful; an estimate of £20k-£24k does make it a fairly sizeable investment however.

The 2016 Classic Car Auctions September sale takes place at the Warwickshire Exhibition Centre on September 24th.
