Peugeot 308 review, prices and specs - Performance and 0-60

The 308 is a polished and competitive family hatch, but could irritate buyers with iffy ergonomics

Performance and 0-60mph time

The entry price of the 308 may look attractive compared to many of its rivals, but the compromise is most obvious under the bonnet. Basic versions of the 1.2-litre three-cylinder can feel overworked when under load and lack overtaking grunt in almost all situations. As such, the 13.3-second 0-62mph time is pretty poor, so there is definitely reason enough to look at more powerful options.

Turbocharged versions of the same three-pot engine are far more pleasing, improving performance while still offering good economy. The 130bhp version of the same engine will hit 62 in a more useful 9.5 seconds, but thanks to the turbocharger, torque is almost double that of the basic version, making the more powerful 1.2 turbo feel significantly more powerful on the road.

If diesels are a must for you, the 1.6 HDi models all hover around between 9-11 seconds to 62mph, the 2.0-litre will hit it in a brisk 8.3 seconds, but is only available on the pricey GT model.
