Brand new engine planned for 2015 Porsche 911 GT3 RS

Porsche bosses point to entirely new powertrain for RS model

The 2015 Porsche 911 GT3 RS is set for a completely new engine, according to claims from Porsche R&D boss Wolfgang Hatz.

The engine, a naturally aspirated six-cylinder, is planned for launch in the GT3 RS and will eventually appear in other models in the Porsche range.

Hatz explained that turbocharging will be reserved for models down the lower end of the Porsche range, with cars like the GT3 RS benefitting from the new naturally aspirated unit.

Speaking to Auto Express, Hatz explained that a manual gearbox hasn't been completely ruled out for the GT3 RS but that it will be PDK only for the time being.

Also exciting is that the new GT3 RS appears to be a much bigger step up from the stock GT3 compared to previous generations.

“Performance has to be the main objective. Customers love the current GT3. The RS has to be the peak. The 991 GT3 was very much a surprise for everybody because it’s a very useable car for every day. The GT3 RS will be more extreme,” Hatz explained to Auto Express.

Also confirmed was a Cayman variant, which Hatz called a "proper motorsport car".
