Limited-run Porsche 911 Edition 50Y Porsche Design revealed

Porsche marks 50 years of Porsche Design with the 911 Edition 50Y Porsche Design special

Porsche has revealed its latest special edition 911, the Edition 50Y Porsche Design, celebrating 50 years of its Porsche Design sub brand that designs everything from sunglasses to watches. The special edition is based on the Targa GTS, with just 750 examples to be available worldwide and prices in the UK starting from £144,360.

Many of Porsche’s special edition models reference motorsport icons, but the Edition 50Y takes inspiration from its design brand. Finished in the same colour scheme and with a number of references to its 1972 Chronograph 1 watch, it instead pays homage to one of Porsche Design’s very first products.

It does that with its colour scheme, with a black exterior paint finish paired with black leather seats broken up with ‘Sport-Tex’ inserts. The Sport Chrono Package is included as standard, with the dashboard-mounted Porsche Design clock bearing the same red second hand as the Chronograph 1 watch. Elsewhere, an exclusive 50th anniversary badge takes pride of place on the engine cover, with Platinum satin ‘Porsche Design’ decals on each door matching the centre-lock wheels.

At its core is the same powertrain you’ll find in an ordinary Targa 4 GTS, with a 3-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six producing 473bhp and 420lb ft of torque for a 3.5sec 0-62mph time and 191mph top speed. The eight-speed PDK comes as standard but Porsche will fit the seven-speed manual transmission as an option.

Buyers can also purchase a modern recreation of the Chronograph 1 watch as an option to go with their limited edition 911. Finished in the same black colour scheme as the original timepiece with the trademark contrasting second hand, the recreation even comes with a wheel-shaped winding rotor and references to the 911’s speedometer.

To complement the special edition, Porsche’s Sonderwunsch division has also concluded a two year restoration of a 1972 911 T 2.4 Targa signed by F.A. Porsche himself. Now upgraded to top of the line S specification and finished in the same colour scheme as the modern Edition 50Y, the once-dilapidated classic has been brought back to life.

Order books for the Porsche 911 Edition 50Y Porsche Design will open in April 2022, with prices starting from £144,360, a £17,600 premium over the standard Targa 4 GTS. Just 750 cars will be available worldwide.
