2020 Subaru Levorg revealed at Tokyo motor show

Subaru displays its next-generation performance estate

This year’s Tokyo motor show is somewhat short of evo metal, but one of Subaru’s offerings caught our eye. The Japanese marque has unveiled its next-generation Levorg, and although still in prototype form, design is unlikely to change dramatically for production. The performance estate will go on sale in Japan mid-2020, coming to UK shores later on.

Design is recognisably Subaru, taking cues from the brand’s current line-up for a more bold, purposeful look. Under the skin is the same SGP framework as the Impreza and XV, featuring full inner frame construction for improved dynamics. Despite the industry’s clear interest in autonomy, Subaru remains set on offering an involving driving experience.

Under the bonnet is a brand-new 1.8-litre, horizontally-opposed, turbocharged four-cylinder boxer, a unit that employs ‘lean-burn’ technology for a combination of efficiency and performance. Figures are yet to be revealed for the power plant, but the marque claims torque will be a strong point.

One particular focus of the new Levorg is safety, with a handful of new technology aiming to make the wagon a safer place to be. A refreshed EyeSight system uses stereo cameras and four radar sensors, located in the front and rear bumpers, allowing the vehicle to analyse its surroundings for more advanced pre-collision braking, even in less-than-ideal conditions. Advanced driving assist also stars, taking high-accuracy GPS data to analyse the road ahead, and adjust cruise control accordingly. More a comfort feature, hands-free driving is available in heavy traffic.

Also new to the Levorg is connected services, utilising the model’s sensors to automatically call emergency services in the event of an accident – severity of impact can also be conveyed, to allow for the appropriate response.

Engine specs, interior images and pricing are still yet to be revealed, but expect to see more info running up to its full launch in mid-2020.
