Evo rating
Price
from £31,685
  • Superb powertrain and agile, delicate and sophisticated handling
  • Lacks a final edge of feedback and adjustability

Not so many years ago, you’d have been branded a liar or mad for saying you owned a car capable of cracking the five second mark to sixty yet capable of returning around 40mpg. But that’s precisely what the Golf R claims to do.

A car as rapid as the Golf R is never going to be cheap to insure, but compared to similarly fast models from rival manufacturers, it’s surprisingly affordable. It helps that it comes with VWs range of driver assistance systems that you get with the normal Golf. Fixed-price servicing means you won’t face supercar bills, either, while predicted residuals of over 50 per cent mean the Golf R holds on to its value well.
