Beijing show: Mercedes-Benz CSC

Mercedes-Benz's Compact Style Coupe has gone on show at the Beijing motor show. Images and details here

Mercedes-Benz has chosen to shrink its popular four-door coupe, the CLS, to create the CSC concept. And unlike Volkswagen's CC, this C-sector entrant looks good from every angle. And the word from Mercedes-Benz is that a production derivative could be launched as early as the end of 2013.

What sets the CSC apart from the C-Class saloon is that it's actually underpinned by an A-class floorpan. Signature CLS featured such as frameless windows, a sloping roof and coupe grille are all there, and it's easy to see how a production car could be spun-off this concept. Would it give Mercedes-Benz a fillip in the all-important D-class sector? On looks alone, we'd say yes.

Nice touches include a full-length panoramic glass roof, and integrated iPad (a feature that's bound to spread). The concept is powered by a 211bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo with direct injection, which drinks petrol, as is befitting of a Chinese launch. It has all-wheel drive, and a seven-speed twin-clutch gearbox.
