I haven’t seen many vRSs on the road, which is a surprise considering what an impressive all-rounder it is. A refined cruiser and a hot-hatch rolled into one, it suits me perfectly for my twice-weekly 96-mile commute of the M11/A14, while also ensuring that there’s still fun to be had cross-country for the rest of the week.
The fine ride, great driving position and effortless low-end torque make it a relaxed and economical motor when you’re not driving like a James Hunt. How does an average of 35mpg sound? It’s even possible to achieve a miserly 38-41mpg on a steady run, although the figure can drop into the low teens if you try hard enough.
The character of the engine and the car’s set-up seem to gel perfectly with each other, too. The ride firms-up as speeds increase and the turbocharged engine revs eagerly to the red line. The engine note lacks aural excitement, though. With the load cover open the exhaust hisses rather than barps, making you think the rear window is slightly open. I’m contemplating fitting a new exhaust system, but it must be one that suits the car’s stealthy nature, giving it a voice rather than a bark. Any suggestions? Email me at fastfleet@evo.co.uk
