The twin-turbo 4.2-litre V8 engine that powers the RS6 features five valves per cylinder, hydraulic adjustment of intake cam timing, and two-stage intake manifolds. Two pressure-loss-optimised intercoolers also help in the quest for massive power. A headline-grabbing 450PS (444bhp) is developed all the way from 5700-6400rpm and the peak torque output of 413lb ft stretches from 1950rpm to 5600rpm.
Audi has struggled in recent times to recreate the magic of the original Quattro. The 1994 RS2, which was jointly developed with Porsche, catapulted to sixty in 4.8sec thanks to its 315bhp turbocharged engine but it lacked ultimate involvement. It was the same story with the more recent RS4 - huge performance but limited fun. This time Audi has gone to exceptional lengths to ensure its new performance flagship will deliver a truly special driving experience.
The RS6 sees the first appearance of a new mechanical active damping system called Dynamic Ride Control (DRC). The system links diagonally opposed shock absorbers with a central valve. When cornering forces act upon the car, oil flows via this central valve, creating what Audi calls 'a supplementary damping force'. The system is claimed to almost entirely eliminate rolling and pitching, endowing the RS6 with a level of composure no rival can match. The Electronic Stability Program has also been recalibrated to suit a more enthusiastic driving style.
Braking performance should be astonishing with 375mm 'floating' discs coupled to eight-pot callipers at the front and a 335mm single-piston set-up at the rear. The discs lurk behind 18-inch nine-spoke alloys (19-inch wheels are an option). In terms of outright point-to-point speed the RS6 should be something of a weapon.
In fact the only fly in the ointment for evo types is the lack of a manual gearbox option. All RS6s will come with a five-speed auto that can be manually shifted either via the gearlever or by using the steering wheel-mounted shift paddles. Prices for the RS6 have yet to be announced but we expect it to cost around £52,000.
