Castrol has announced that on October 28th it will partner Bugatti in an attempt to establish the Veyron officially as the world's fastest production car.
Bugatti will make the attempt at Volksvagen's Ehra Lessien test track near Wolfsburg in Germany, under the watchful gaze of Guiness Book of Records officials. The track features a 9km straight that should help the car hit its claimed top speed of 253mph, especially as it has already "unofficially" managed it on this track already.
If you're thinking that a 5.5 mile straight is easily enough, the Veyron will be covering 370 feet per second at top speed - that means a mile takes 15 seconds. Stopping takes the length of 5 football pitches.
Currently the title of world's fastest production car is held by the Koenigsegg CCR, at 245mph. However, with the Veyron's 1000bhp topping the CCR's power by nearly 200 horses, taking the record should be no problem. As long as they can keep it on the track.
