It might not be the fastest lap of the Nurburgring this year, but BMW is still delighted that a Mini E (yes, E for Electric) has hummed round in under ten minutes. Former DTM racer Thomas Jäger was the pilot for the lap of a distinctly foggy ‘Ring and he hit a rather impressive 116mph at one point.
The Mini was significantly modified, with a rollcage, lightweight CFRP bodyshell, race suspension, race brakes and a limited-slip diff. However, the crucial component, the 150kw electric motor powered by 5088 lithium-ion battery cells, remained standard.
