Lots of us car enthusiasts fancy ourselves as top-flight mechanics, but it’s the sad truth that a fair few of us can’t really tell one end of a spanner from the other.

Recent research by the RAC suggests 70% of car owners prefer to fix their own cars where possible but whether it’s always wise for them to be doing so is another matter. This quiz should help sort pros from the chancers, or at least work out if you can tell one basic car part from the next.
