The best hardcore supercars from the 2000s – car pictures of the week

In the current issue of evo we revisit the greatest supercars of the 2000s, including a recap of the best limited-run specials. These are some of our favourites

The supercar rapidly evolved at the turn of the millennium. This was an era of new tech such as automated manual gearboxes, greater use of carbon construction and a variety of layouts, from front-engined super GTs to traditional mid-engined exotics. It was also an era where manufacturers explored a variety of supercar sub-genres, such as lightened track specials and ultra-limited and highly bespoke halo models.

In the current issue of evo, we drive some of the most iconic noughties supercars, and also look back at some of our favourite limited-edition models of the decade, from the likes of Porsche, Ferrari and Lamborghini. Porsche and Honda were the pioneers of track-focused models in the 2000s, launching the 996 GT3 RS and second-generation NSX-R early in the decade. This was a new breed of supercar that gave rise to more hardened, lightweight specials designed for track use, such as Ferrari’s 360 Challenge Stradale and the Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera. Track days weren’t as popular back then so these more expensive, more stripped back versions were a hard sell for some, but now they’re extremely sought after as uncompromising and raw driving machines.

Aside from track specials, the 2000s saw manufacturers experiment with limited edition halo cars. From Lamborghini there was the Murciélago-based Reventón, while Aston Martin produced the One-77. Both sit on the verge of being hypercars, with certain design elements eventually trickling down to series production models.

To read more about these special edition supercars, plus our drive story of six of the most iconic examples from the decade, pick up a copy of evo 350.
