Watch - Ford GT race car in action at a secret shakedown

Hear the amazing sounds of Ford's new Le Mans racer

Ford has released a video showing its Ford GT race car in action at a shakedown earlier this year. Filmed prior to the car's unveiling at Le Mans, it gives a good idea of just how the GT will look and sound on track.

The Ford GT race car has been built to compete in the LMGTE category of racing in the 2016 World Endurance Championship as well as the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship in North America.

It will be pitted against the likes of Aston Martin, Chevrolet, Ferrari and Porsche and as such has already been going through an extensive test program, as the above video shows.

The GT race car is just as important to Ford as its road-going cousin. It represents a return to the world of supercars and endurance racing as well as acting as a platform for Ford to demonstrate its EcoBoost engine technology.

The GT race car will be powered by a race-prepped variant of the twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6. Already a proven race powertrain, it made its debut in the 2014 Daytona 24, taking the win the following year in CGRFS's Target Ford prototype.

The new GT will make its debut in 2016, 50 years after the Ford GT40 finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd at Le Mans in 1966. In the meantime, enjoy Ford's video of the car in action.
