BTCC Touring Car gallery

As the BTCC regs change, we look at some classic and obscure Touring Car racers

BTCC is the latest motorsport championship to announce new cost-cutting regulations. From 2011 teams will be using NGTCs – Next Generation Touring Cars – and in 2013 they get the advantage.

The new cars will be front-wheel driven, with 2-litre turbocharged engines. These will have approximately 300bhp and must last the whole season, costing £15k each and a further £8k for an end-of-season rebuild.

NGTCs will also use a host of shared components, including the ECU, gearbox, brakes, steering rack and fuel tank. They will also have a minimum length that will rule out current hatchback entries such as the Honda Civic and SEAT Leon.

While it brings a new, more sustainable future to the BTCC it may also lead to a standardised grid, and rule out some of the more random Touring Cars we’ve seen over the years.

We’ve put together a gallery featuring some of these oddities – Mazda RX-7s and Lexus saloons – as well as some of the classis repmobiles from the sport’s successful period in the 1990s. Scroll down and have a browse through the gallery, which starts and ends with two very different Chevrolets…
