Volkswagen Scirocco GTS debuts with 217bhp

Hot new Scirocco arrives in Shanghai

Volkswagen is to bring its new Scirocco GTS to the Shanghai motor show. Powered by a 2-litre TSI engine and dressed in R-Line bodywork, the hot coupe produces 217bhp and 258lb ft of torque.

Drive is sent to the front wheels through a six-speed manual or optional DSG auto, enabling the GTS to sprint from 0-62mph in 6.5sec and onto a 153mph top speed (152mph for the DSG).

With the manual gearbox, the GTS can manage 46.3mpg combined and emits 139g/km CO2. These numbers switch to 44.1mpg and 148g/km for the DSG.

The new car’s turbocharged four-cylinder is largely based on the unit found in the standard Golf GTI, and as such the GTS also receives the Golf’s golf ball gear knob.

Outside, it also gains new 18-inch Norwich alloy wheels, with 19-inch Luganos available as an option. As standard, the GTS receives the R-Line exterior package, which adds R-style bumpers, skirts, a rear spoiler and a diffuser. European buyers can spec their GTS with a twin-stripe decal; Chinese buyers receive it as standard.

The interior features a flat-bottomed sports steering wheel, stainless steel pedals and piano black dash trim. The GTS also receives VW’s latest MIB II infotainment touchscreen too, with Black Vienna leather upholstery, a panoramic tilt sunroof, bi-xenon headlights and a multifunction steering wheel making up the rest of the options list.

The Volkswagen Scirocco GTS arrives in Europe at the end of May. Pricing is yet to be confirmed, but we expect it to start close to £29,000.
