Alfa Romeo Stelvio – MPG and running costs

You'll struggle to hit 30mpg in the petrol model, but the diesel fares much better

  • Agile feel for an SUV; design flair
  • Cabin is decidedly last-gen; knobbly ride at times

Where rivals from BMW and Audi have gained mild-hybrid tech over the years, the Stelvio's four-cylinder petrol and diesel units are the same as they were back in 2017, with no electrification of any kind. The Stelvio isn't the most frugal SUV available, particularly in petrol form, but it remains in the same ballpark as its rivals – partly thanks to its relatively low kerb weight.

At launch, the diesel Stelvio was rated at 58.9mpg, but more stringent WLTP testing has seen this figure drop to 46.3mpg for today's model. The 276bhp petrol version doesn't fare so well. Alfa claims it can achieve 33.2mpg, but in reality, reaching 30mpg requires a very careful right foot. That doesn't sound promising in isolation, but a less powerful Audi Q5 45 TFSI achieves the same claimed figure; middling efficiency is simply the reality of running a relatively powerful petrol SUV. The Stelvio should at least wear through its consumables at a slower rate than heavier rivals, though.
