BMW 1-series – MPG and running costs

In mild-hybrid, three-cylinder form the 1-series is a frugal machine, but efficiency takes a hit should you opt for a 2-litre xDrive model

  • Vast options list, quality feel, accessible performance
  • Still not the last word in engagement, design

It should come as no surprise that the entry-level 1-series is a frugal machine, with its 1.5-litre three-cylinder paired with 48V mild-hybrid tech. While it won’t run on pure-electric power for any significant distance, this hybrid assistance helps plug the gaps left by the combustion engine, both in terms of performance and efficiency. BMW quotes a WLTP combined efficiency figure of 52mpg for the 120 Sport and M Sport.

A larger displacement, more cylinders, more driven wheels and a lack of hybrid assistance make the 2-litre four-cylinder xDrive models considerably less efficient. BMW quotes 40mpg for the 215bhp 123 xDrive, with the figure dropping to just over 30mpg on the WLTP combined cycle for the M135 range-topper – expect this to drop into the 20s without much effort on a more spirited run.
