Ford Focus review – performance and 0-62mph time

Performance on the road is defined by strong torque delivery, helping it feel quicker than the numbers suggest

Evo rating
  • Gets the fundamentals right; handles well; impressive new interfaces
  • It's maybe a bit austere, despite it now being quite expensive

The new Focus’s economy and CO2 emissions have been prioritised, rather than outright performance. The 123bhp models will hit 62mph in 10.2sec regardless of transmission, while the more powerful 153bhp version drops that down to 9.0sec for the manual or 8.4sec for the dual clutch.

Explanation for the variation of performance between transmissions is due to the added weight the MHEV system adds, balanced out by the dual-clutch transmission’s shorter ratios. The six-speed manual’s ratios are pretty long, which can drop the Focus out of the torque band. This is only partially offset by the mild-hybrid system.

These times are on par with those of other mainstream hatchbacks, but without a model between the standard cars and far more powerful ST, those looking for a brisk warm hatchback without compromises in economy or driveability may need to look elsewhere.

The lightest entry-level Focus sans its MHEV system weighs in at 1330kg, which rises to 1349kg with the MHEV system. Dual-clutch models both sit on the road at 1387kg, suggesting the transmission itself is 38kg heavier than the manual.
