Mercedes-Benz GLA review - not just a ramped up A-class - MPG and runnings costs

Merc's GLA is a mildly SUV-like take on the A-class.

  • Comfortable, spacious, well-made, looks interesting
  • Limited manual options, none-too generous specification

MPG and running costs

While the GLA is at its best in 4Matic four-wheel drive guise, it's certainly not at its most efficient. Only the entry-level front-wheel drive 200 d (fitted with either the manual or the automatic gearbox) dips down below the all-important 120g/km threshold in terms of emissions with a commendable 110g/km rating. In economy terms that's 67.3mpg.

Both the GLA 200 d and 220 d return 56.5mpg and emit 130g/km in automatic 4Matic guise, meaning not much in terms of more fuel consumption in reality, but considerably more Vehicle Excise Duty tax or - more significantly - Benefit in Kind tax for company car buyers. Clearly they're not the target market for the petrol models either, but for the record, the GLA 250 4Matic emits 155g/km and returns 43.5mpg on the combined cycle, while the GLA 45 AMG's figures are 172g/km and 38.2mpg respectively.

Mercedes-Benz offers a personalised Service Care package for owners depending on likely mileage. It starts at £24 a month for the GLA. Insurance groups are 21E to 41E.
