New Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo spied ahead of 2020 launch

The Cross Turismo will join Porsche’s Taycan range as a slightly more rugged take on the performance EV

Porsche CEO Oliver Blume confirmed the production of the Taycan Cross Turismo in early 2019, following the launch of the concept at 2018’s Geneva motor show. Now, ahead of its scheduled reveal later this year, spy photographers have spotted the model testing in Germany. 

Similar in concept to the Panamera Sport Turismo, the Taycan Cross Turismo will be more of a lifestyle estate than a traditional family holdall. While no specification has been confirmed at the time of writing, expect it to be closer to that of a crossover in concept than a full SUV.

Powertrain offerings are likely to be similar to those available on the standard Taycan, with a permanently excited synchronous electric motor sitting on each axle. The 4S sends up to 563bhp (on overboost) to all four wheels for a 4.0sec 0-62mph time, with the range-topping Turbo S adopting marginally larger motors for an output of 616bhp (750bhp on overboost) when fitted with the 93.4kWh Performance Battery Plus option – standstill to 62mph happens in 2.6sec, with top speed coming at 160mph.

Underpinning the Taycan’s electric drivetrain is a lithium-ion battery that forms part of a powerful 800V electrical system. Porsche claims the Taycan can travel 310 miles between charges, but crucially, the cells can be replenished in just four minutes to provide 100km (62 miles) of range.

Though the same attractive estate bodystyle as the upcoming Sport Turismo can be seen, only minor differences are apparent on the latest test mule seen in these images. While a more rugged front splitter and side skirt are present, the charming raised ride height and bold arches of the concept are yet to be seen.

As with the standard Taycan, Porsche claims that the Cross Turismo will offer not only similar performance, but also the latest connectivity functions, over-the-air updates, functions on demand and premium charging services both at home and on the road.

What isn’t known at this stage is if the production Taycan Cross Turismo will retain the rugged approach of the E-Cross Turismo Concept, with its tough-looking plastic wheelarch and sill extensions. Elsewhere, the E-Cross concept features matrix LED headlamps with the firm’s X-Sight enhanced main beam function.

Major Porsche investment in electric cars 

Porsche’s move into electric vehicles will see it invest €6billion by 2022, including converting its existing Zuffenhausen engine plant to also build the Taycan’s electric drive units. There will also be a dedicated paint shop and assembly facility to build the four and five-door electric cars.

Nearly €500million of the €6billion investment will be earmarked for Taycan variants and derivatives, with a further €700million to be spent on new technology, charging infrastructure and smart mobility. Development of plug-in hybrid models will also continue.

On top of its investment in e-mobility, Porsche will also invest €15billion in new products across its portfolio by 2023.
