Weaving around its natural urban domain the Brabus returns 54.3mpg, aided by stop-start technology, rising to 62.8mpg on a combined cycle. Emitting 102g/km of CO2 casts the performance Smart in isolation from the rest of the range, which are £20 cheaper to tax in year one before the blanket annual VED rate kicks in.

Unless you’re a young or newly qualified driver, the low insurance group of 11 is unlikely to have you trawling comparison sites to find a reasonable deal. Service costs are as reasonable as can be expected and a three year unlimited mileage warranty is standard.
