Audi S1 quattro (2014-2018) review – MPG and running costs

The Audi S1 brings speed, premium appeal and impressive build quality to the junior hot hatch segment.

  • Expensive, not as exciting as some

Audi claims 40.4mpg on the combined cycle (39.8mpg for the slightly heavier S1 Sportback), but in reality that figure will be closer to 32mpg in mixed driving. On a steady run that’ll creep up towards 40mpg, but you’ll struggle to get much better than 25mpg if you use the performance fully and often.

Most of the S1’s small hot hatch alternatives use smaller 1.6-litre engines so they have the potential for greater fuel efficiency when resisting the urge to use their performance.

A set of four 17-inch high performance tyres from Continental or Pirelli will set you back around £320, which is also true of the S1’s rivals.

Audi will sell you an extended four-year/75,000 mile warranty for £235, or a five-year/90,000 mile warranty for £500. The Audi badge will help to keep residual values up; three-year-old examples are currently trading for £17,000-£18,000 - still in the same ballpark as a brand-new Fiesta ST!
