Lexus NX review - prices, specs and 0-60 time - Design

Distinctive and beautifully made, but no good to drive

Evo rating
RRP
from £29,995
  • F Sport looks sharp, exceptional build quality, low tax bills
  • Badly needs a diesel engine, awful hybrid CVT, inert to drive

Your eyes won't thank you for recalling the hideous LF-NX concept car that preceded the production model, but Lexus should be applauded for adopting the overall sense of that concept and banishing blandness from this SUV's design.

Saying that, it's a shape that divides opinion and really, really needs to be in F Sport guise to look its best. The rear haunches are perhaps its least divisive feature, appearing quite muscular with bulging wheelarches, though the detail design of the headlights and side glass are also worth inspecting if you're into that sort of thing. Meanwhile, the nose, with its spindle-shaped grille definitely splits opinion. It's positively in-your-face in the F Sport car.

In contrast, the interior design is never offensive, though it is quirky with its centre console mimicking the shape of that aggressive grille up front, for example. Don't even consider buying an NX without leather upholstery.
