Alpina B6 GT3

Alpina rejoins motorsport with its BMW 6-series-based GT3 racer

This is the Alpina B6 GT3. It signals the BMW tuner’s reappearance in racing after twenty years of absence. It’s based on the BMW 6-series coupe and will compete in the FIA GT3 European championship, with an official Alpina racing team currently looking for four drivers.

The public are also able to buy the B6 GT3 and compete themselves. There’s no word on prices, but they’ll be getting a pretty potent racing car. It comes endowed with a supercharged 4.4-litre V8 providing 523bhp and 535lb ft of torque. The engine is mated to a six-speed sequential gearbox which helps shove the racing Six to 62mph in 3.9sec with a top speed of 177mph.

Interestingly it weighs just 1350kg, saving around a third of a ton compared to an equivalent BMW 6-series. Thanks to some lightweight 18in Michelin wheels it also boasts a lower centre of gravity and likely lower unsprung weight, too. That’s key when it comes to outcornering tough GT3 championship rivals from Ferrari and Aston Martin.

The B6 GT3 will be on Alpina’s stand at the Geneva motor show, alongside the new Alpina B7 – an unlikely tuned version of the BMW 7-series. You can read about the LPG-powered Alpina B10 we've been running on the evo Fast Fleet.
