Porsche 911 Targa (991, 2014-2016) review - why it's the best open-top 911 - Design

An impressive package that sits above the convertible in dynamic terms

Evo rating
RRP
from £87,025
  • Better than a cabriolet, more exotic presence than coupe or cab, tractable engine
  • Wind noise, added weight, is it really a GTS?

Design

The current generation Targa takes 18 seconds to open and close its roof. The process sees the entire rear windscreen raised up and out, with the cloth roof then folded down into the boot and the screen then closed back over it.

Engineered to excess, it's theatrical to watch and gives the Targa a proper 'special move' that some 911s lack. That silver rollover hoop also adds an exotic touch that you just don't normally see with Porsche.

It's more a matter of personal opinion here, but the GTS which gets smoked lights, black lettering and wheels, appears a little too much of a mish-mash of new and old to retain the retro-cool of a standard Targa.
