MAT and Jannarelly announce engineering and manufacturing collaboration

Low-production sports car manufacturers to join forces in Design-1 production

Specialist low-production car manufacturers Manifattura Automobili Torino (MAT) and Jannarelly sports cars have announced a new collaboration that will see the two join forces in the design, development and engineering of current and future projects.

Jannarelly’s Design-1 showed up on the scene in 2019 as a super lightweight sports car fitted with a mid/rear-engined Nissan-sourced V6 engine. Designed to sit somewhere between traditional superlights like a Caterham Seven and something more enclosed such as the Alpine A110, the model has great potential – something that could now be realised with a new manufacturing agreement in place.

But the correspondence between the two companies will go beyond just the manufacturing of the current Design-1, as Jannarelly’s next project, the Design-2 GT, will not just be built in Italy by MAT, but also co-designed and developed between the two companies. The new model will be more of a GT, although we’ll have to wait a little longer to find out more of its technical makeup or positioning.

MAT itself was founded by Pininfarina’s ex head of special projects Paolo Garella. As well as consulting, it also designs and manufactures its own projects including its MAT Lancia Stratos reimagination that transforms a Ferrari F430 chassis and powertrain to create a dramatic new modern take of the iconic 60s rally car. It also manufactures other super and hypercars like the Apollo IE, Scuderia Glickenhaus SCG003 and Owl Osprey.

The collaboration will also extend to the business development side, sharing internal resources and creating a closer synergy between its locations in Italy, Dubai and LA. In a statement released between the two companies, Anthony Jannarelly said: ‘We founded the company in our small workshop in Dubai just five years ago. To have the opportunity now to build our cars in Torino with M.A.T. is a definitive milestone for our young company. This new collaboration represents a unique opportunity to combine and magnify our respective strengths to build some truly unique sports cars.’

We’ll look on in anticipation of seeing what this new collaboration will bring.
