Interior and Tech

The Golf R estate might be fairly expensive, but the build quality feels more than matched to the price tag. Touch points feel of premium quality, while the interior has a nice solid feel that suggests the R Estate will more than stand the test of a few years of load lugging.

The driving position and ergonomics are very good, with the car offering plenty of adjustment in both the seat and the wheel.

Little touches like silver stitching on the flat bottomed wheel, as well as the use of gloss black and carbon-look trim, help separate the R out from a standard estate. Sports seats upholstered in Alcantara come as standard, although you can upgrade to leather should you choose.

As for the tech, VW’s Discover system is very well put together, with simple and easy to use menus that few should struggle with. Other gadgetry, like adaptive cruise control, is also as straightforward as you’d ever need it to be.

The Golf R Estate is a big step up over the standard hatch in terms of load lugging capacity, offering 605 litres of space with the rear seats folded up.
