Mercedes CLA 45 AMG Shooting Brake, details and photos

Mercedes’ new CLA 45 AMG Shooting Brake has debuted at the Detroit auto show

First there was the A45 AMG hot hatch, then the CLA 45 AMG saloon and now there’s this, the CLA 45 AMG Shooting Brake. Previewed last year and now uncovered at a special event prior to the Detroit auto show, the Shooting Brake is the most practical offering from the A-class based AMG model.

Under the Shooting Brake’s bonnet is the same 2-litre turbocharged four-pot producing the same 355bhp and 332lb ft of torque as the rest of the model range, but in the heavier estate its performance is slightly blunted at 4.7sec to 0-62mph, 0.2sec down on the saloon. Top speed remains limited to 155mph.

Interestingly, fuel economy improves by 1 to 40.8mpg, most likely due to the improved aero of a Shooting Brake body style (Mercedes says its 0.26 coefficient of drag matches the CLS Shooting brake), whilst boot space grows to 490-litres (1354-litres when the rear seats are folded flat).

Prices are still unconfirmed, but we expect them to hover above £42,000, placing the CLA 45 AMG Shooting Brake above the VW Golf R (which produces 297bhp) by around £10,000, and the Audi S4 Avant (328bhp), which starts just below £40,000.
