2022 BMW 8-series revealed sporting fresh styling and tech

BMW’s flagship coupe, convertible and saloon hit the refresh button in their mid-life update

The BMW 8-series has been given a light refresh for the 2022 model year, with all three of the available body styles receiving key updates to their digital interfaces, alongside subtler changes to the exterior styling and colour and trim options.

As before, all UK models will be exclusively available in M Sport trim, with the same three engine options made up from an 840i powered by in-line six cylinder petrol and the M850i with its twin-turbocharged V8. All powertrains are unchanged, with the M Performance model packing the biggest numbers with 523bhp. All are connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission, and rear- and all-wheel drive for the 840i and M850i respectively.

Exterior changes are subtle, sharing the same underlying design with previous 8-series, save for some new mesh inserts in both the upper and lower front grilles. Controversially, the upper kidney grilles are now illuminated, which is particularly obvious on cars fitted with the new satin-finish grille surrounds. There’s also some new colour options and a new wheel design shared with the 4-series Gran Coupe.

Inside, the centre infotainment screen has been upsized to 12.3-inches from the previous 10.25-inch unit, with the latest BMW interface thrown in for good measure – there are some new colour and trim options in there too.

BMW hasn’t made any changes to the chassis hardware or setup, made up from a double-wishbone front end and five-link rear. M850i models are available with an additional M Adaptive suspension option that incorporates an active anti-roll mitigation system like you’ll find on larger SUVs and rear-wheel steering.

Prices for the new 8-series will start at £72,225 for the 840i Gran Coupe, and rise to £101,215 for the M850i. Coupe models are £2500 more model for model, and the Convertible a further £7000.
