Potential 992.2 Porsche 911 Carrera prototype spied

A Porsche 911 prototype isn’t hard to find, but figuring what type is underneath is the tricky bit

This winter testing season has seen an array of 911 prototypes milling around their arctic test centres, but among the new Safari, potential Sport Classic reboot and the GT3 RS, it’s this more unusual prototype that’s keeping its true identity under wraps better than most.

Timing would suggest that this otherwise standard-looking Carrera could be an early prototype for the 992.2 update that’s due next year. The distinctive new front apron isn’t familiar to any existing model, with a layer of camouflage only just hiding what look to be new vertically-arranged active cooling vanes – a contrast to the horizontal units used now. Makeshift secondary lighting units that incorporate the parking lamps and indicators also suggest a new placement for the production items.

The body itself looks to be the derived from a standard Carrera, with the only other noticeable bodywork change being the rear bumper, one that uses a different dual exhaust system that exit closer together than the units in standard Carreras and Turbos, without being as close together as those seen on the GT3. We expect these to be the new sports exhaust option – close in concept to the 991.2, which had a similar placement.

As for what engine they’re connected to, it’s too early to be sure, but it’s most likely to be the existing twin-turbocharged 3-litre flat-six unit. Some rumours have suggested a return to a naturally-aspirated motor, making use of the 4-litre unit as found in the Cayman and Boxster GTS 4.0, but this would see performance of the 992.2 drop significantly in comparison to its predecessor – something we suspect buyers of Carreras would take issue with, even if it was in exchange for the added engagement associated with the naturally-aspirated flat-six.

Other notable differences include a switch over to the fully-digital instrument cluster as is found on the Taycan. While some of the interior’s tactility would be compromised, it is a much more flexible and configurable interface to interact with. Otherwise, we expect the 992.2 to also introduce hybrid technology into the 911 range, working in conjunction with the eight-speed PDK transmission and combustion engine. It’s unknown what layout the hybrid will utilise, or what level of intervention it will have within the powertrain as a whole.

We expect to see more 992.2 prototypes throughout the next year or so until its planned reveal date some time next year. Before that point, though, the 911 still has plenty of derivatives to turn into – from the aforementioned Safari and GT3 RS, and a new heritage-inspired Sport Classic.
