Used car deals of the week: a Jaguar F-type for £25k
We dive into the classifieds to find the very best performance cars for the least amount of money, including a Jaguar F-type for less than a hot hatch
Jaguar is entering a new era with its bold new GT saloon, and while this car is closer to fruition than ever before, its maker still has no new cars on sale. To plug that gap, we’ve sourced a dangerously tempting Jaguar F-type V6 from 2017 that could be in your hands for the same money as a new Hyundai hatchback.
This week, we also look to the other end of the market for a used Mercedes-Benz G-class, but unusually, there’s no V8 to be found here. If eight cylinders are what you’re after, the cut-price McLaren 600LT on this list will do the trick nicely, with a sub-£30k Z4 M40i making things a little more accessible.
Jaguar F-type (V6, 2017)
£25,250
A ride onboard Jaguar’s incoming GT offered a fascinating insight into what’s to come, but we still have a while to wait before it hits the road. In the meantime, the classifieds are the only place you can find Jaguars, and this 2017 F-type V6 is a particularly good one. Priced at just over £25,000, it gets you into an excellent sports coupe for the price of an everyday hatchback.
> Jaguar GT ride review – we’ve seen the new Jaguar and been for a drive
This car does go without the rowdy 5-litre V8 of its range-topping relative, but 380bhp from its V6 is enough for a 171mph top speed to put it right in-line with the German alternatives. With the optional 770w Meridian sound system and desirable 20-inch diamond cut wheels (in great condition, we must say), there are plenty of options equipped too. It might have covered 75,000 miles, but with only two owners on its books and the car completely untouched in terms of modification, it might just be a punt worth taking.

Mercedes-Benz G400d (2022)
£99,800
The snarling, side-piped G63 is the face of the G-class range, but time in the entry-level car reminded me just how excellent six-cylinder diesels can be. Smooth, torque-rich and with a surprisingly satisfying sound track, its 3-litre turbocharged straight-six is a perfect match for the sturdy, go-anywhere nature of the G-class, and makes it a whole lot more affordable to run too.
> Mercedes-Benz G-class review – flawed, but deeply desirable
In earlier G400d-form (the new car is a mild-hybrid G450d), 330bhp is enough for a 6.4sec 0-62mph time and 130mph top speed, and while the latter is more than enough for the mass at play, numbers aren’t where this car’s charm lies. Finished in tasteful Metallic Emerald Green and with smaller diamond cut wheels, this single-owner 2022 car is the ultimate understated G-class (if such a thing exists). After 44,000 miles on the road, it’s dropped just below the £100,000 mark.

McLaren 600LT (2019)
£121,945
The McLaren Long Tail lineup is one of the most revered of the supercar segment, and while Woking’s yet to produce a dud, there are some models that are now worth a whole lot less than their performance would suggest. The 600LT is a prime example, as while it’s one of the best cars McLaren has produced, you can pick this one up for just over £120k.
> McLaren GT long term test – four months in the 203mph 'grand tourer'
It’s hardly low on stats, with its 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 making 592bhp for a 2.9sec 0-62mph and competitive 204mph top speed – it’s as raw and pure as you’d ever need a supercar to be, and better still, it shoots flames from top-mounted exhausts. After 10,000 miles under a single owner though, you could get this black car for over £50,000 less than it was new…

BMW Z4 M40i (2020)
£28,021
The BMW Z4 is meeting its end in early 2026, with the Final Edition marking the end of third-generation production after seven years. This car will cost £65,000 should you opt for the range-topping M40i, but for half that amount, you could have almost exactly the same car, just without its matte paintwork and interior treatment…
> The BMW Z4 Final Edition is the very last of its kind
Around five years and 45,536 miles since this bold Portimao blue example left the showroom, it’s now on the market for under £30,000. Powered by the same 3-litre turbocharged B58 straight-six as the Final Edition, it produces an identical 335bhp for a 4.5sec 0-62mph time and 155mph top speed, sent through an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission to the rear wheels alone. It’s not light on optional extras either, having been fitted with the Ambient Lighting back, Connection Professional pack and more by its original owner.
