Performance and 0-60mph time

It’s genuinely difficult to contain your mirth when you push the 5.0 V8 Supercharged’s accelerator into the carpet and the Range Rover charges to 60mph in 5.1 seconds (62mph in 5.8 seconds). That’s sports car territory, and while its ferocity inevitably tails off as the speed gets higher, the Range Rover is still indecently quick. It sounds pretty magnificent, too. Aerodynamics rather than an electronic limiter see that Supercharged flagship top out at 155mph - and that number is only achievable on the 22-inch alloy wheels. There are faster SUVs out there (just), but none are hauling around as much fine cow hide, polished wood veneers or off-road weaponry as the Range Rover.

Prodigious output isn’t just limited to the Supercharged V8. The 3.0-litre TDV6, SDV6 Hybrid and 4.4-litre SDV8 turbodiesel might lack the range-topper’s ultimate performance, but they don’t trail too far behind.

The 335bhp 4.4-litre SDV8’s 517lb ft of twist betters its relation, which plays a part in its impressive 6.5-second 0-60mph time, its immediate and greater torque output actually on occasion making it feel quicker than the 5.0 V8 S/C. The Hybrid SDV6 matches the 6.5-second 0-60mph time of the SDV8 as well as its 135mph top speed. Choose the TDV6 and 60mph takes 7.4 seconds from rest and it reaches a maximum of 130mph. Opt for the long wheelbase models, available on the SDV8 and 5.0 V8 S/C only, and the 0-60mph time increases by 0.1 seconds with the diesel and 0.5 seconds with the petrol.
