Peugeot 908 RC concept previews engine for Le Mans

Making its debut at the Paris motor show in September is the Peugeot 908 RC concept car, the underpinnings of which, including its 5.5-litre V12 HDi turbodiesel engine, are essentially those with which the French company hopes to challenge Audi at Le Mans next year.

The engine – mounted transversely between the cabin’s rear bulkhead and the boot – has a wide, 100 degree V to lower its centre of gravity and benefit handling. Power is claimed to be on the happy side of 700bhp, complemented by 885lb ft of torque.

The 908 RC runs with particulate filters in its exhaust system to enhance its green credentials, although its 186mph top speed could damage any such environmentalist goodwill.

Created by the Peugeot Design Centre in Paris, the 908 RC uses flying buttresses to disguise its engine location, although its distinctly ‘cab forward’ styling might give the keen-eyed a clue.

As with last year’s startling 907 coupe concept, don’t expect the 908 RC to pitch up at your local Peugeot showroom any time soon, but the company’s spokesfolk suggest that elements of its styling may appear in future mainstream models.
